The X-29 is a pretty sexy looking plane. Exotic forward swept wings, canards, nice canopy and a good engine. The fact of the matter is that it was cobbled together with parts from all kinds of planes. Bits of F-5, F-16 and others can be found here.

Had one like it in ‘86,

Beautiful, great ideas, but half-ass execution? Was it built by Chrysler or something?

Terrible cargo capacity though.

The X-29 was the inspiration for that G.I. Joe set, it started flying in ‘84

I’d rather fly classic analog inverted gullwing.

Why are you putting an Avenger hashtag anywhere near the words beautiful and great

Meanwhile, in Dayton....
With bonus Bell X-5. These are from our visit last summer. I could spend days there...

What was half assed? It made 242 test flights and became the first forward swept wing aircraft to go supersonic. The technologies it tested are too numerous to mention here.

maybe it’s from an era where we didn’t pretend a single plane could do bombing, escort, dog fighting, navy and air force duty, and have a single suffix at the same time...
Looking at you, f-35....

I was partial to this one myself. Nobody ever accused Hasbro of coming up with their own ideas...

I always thought combining the x-29 with the x-31 would make for one ultra-maneuverable plane.

I used to play Jane’s Fighters Anthology, a late 90s flight sim with a vast array of military aircraft you could fly. The X-29 was my favorite because it could outmaneuver just about anything else in the sky. Unfortunately if you pulled full Gs for more than a few seconds, you blacked out (yes, a game from 1998 simulated blacking out at high Gs!).

I just wanted an excuse to take a swipe at Chrysler. I thought the x-29 was amazing, but I liked the Crossfire and the Plymouth Prowler too so you can’t really trust my judgement

We did sort of expect all that out of the F-4 though.

Hmm.... I love the F4..... such an amazing jet....
If I remember correctly it was a bit on the heavy side, wasn’t it?

Don’t you dare talk about sexy planes without posting a Starship

Yes it was a big plane. It’s a bit unfair to say that it was supposed to be a dogfighter, really it was supposed to make dogfighting obsolete.
You can get a bit of a size comparison here:
An F-4 (with wings extended) is in the middle of the landing area. At the bottom right are the two planes that replaced it in Navy service, the F-14 and F/A-18, plus another F-4 (this time with wings folded).
For the Air Force, it was replace by the F-15 which is a similar size, and the F-16, which is much smaller.

Well, nowadays dogfighting is almost out of the question, rarely do bombers need escorts, and also rarely do fighters get close enough to carrier groups to be a nuisance.... Nevermind that the only country’s whose planes can challenge yours (the EU and Russia basically, maybe India I guess) are so tied up in peace agreements or peace ultimatums with ya’ll that I honestly doubt we’ll ever see a honest to god comparation.... even if supposedly the new russian jets are more agile, the f-35 supposedly is so technologically superior that getting near it is almost impossible.

Yeah, some people say that the F-35 is terrible because it is not as good in a dogfight as the F-16, but really you shouldn’t need to be dogfighting. Now it is true that we also said that in Vietnam, and it wasn’t true, but that was half a century ago, missiles have gotten much better.

I think that the real issue of the F-35 is that it was very expensive to design, adding “it’s not even good at dogfighting” is just the cherry atop.
Really making any new jets under, lets call it “relative peacetime”, is pointless because there isn’t a real threat to the US so the companies take their time and also love being extremely corrupted.
If lockheed knew that if the F-35 wasn’t made quickly and cheaply or else a nation would invade the US or something draconian like that they would’ve made it in 2 years.... maximum, probably at a third of the cost.

Its Russian counterpart Su-47 is also a very interesting plane. Only one was made but it might still be in flying condition.

This plane was kind of a like someone on the internet saying they were going to convert his rotary engine in his Mazda to diesel. We all laugh, ask why, make a long list of reasons why it won’t work, , say they’ll never figure it out, etc…
Then he pulls it off. The car isn’t really great, but damn… he pulled it off and we’re all impressed anyway.
